"Flowers and plants are a constant inspiration and source of delight to me. Like characterful creatures, flowers appear in our gardens and in wild places, and amaze with their infinite variety and beauty. Their familiar faces reappear each season, with their enchanting colours, shapes, patterns and textures, recognisable, but at the same time new, as though glimpsed for the first time.
In this exhibition my theme extends to both land and city scapes. Several recent trips to Fabriano in Italy, the origin of the famous watercolour paper, a two-week Artist in Residency in 2017 at the Fabriano Museum of Paper and Watermark (Museo della Carta e della Filigrana) allowed me to become acquainted with the spirit of a new land and to soak up the light and colour which characterise Italy. I wandered the town and the surrounding countryside on foot and by bicycle, assimilating my new environment and sketching as I went. Rome, a point of transition on the journey from Edinburgh to Fabriano, was also beguiling, and a rooftop terrace a temporary studio.
Watercolour seems to have its origins in the rain. There is something elemental and captivating about creating an image by simply dissolving pigments in water and applying them to paper. Watercolour becomes an extension of the natural world."
